Q: What is Low Vision?
A: Low Vision refers to permanent vision loss that cannot be restored or corrected by surgery, medicine, glasses or contact lenses. Low vision can be caused by many conditions including retinitis pigmentosa, usher syndrome, macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, trauma and even stroke. Many with low vision are classified legally blind and the condition affects people from all countries, races, languages, religions, and cultural backgrounds.
Low Vision Support Group was started to provide online support group for people with low vision. Low vision can change the way you see, perceive and interact with the world. When you struggle to see your environment, you may find yourself falling or injuring yourself frequently. After enough falls and injuries, it is natural to avoid unsafe situations by retreating and isolating yourself. When you stop driving, this isolation can be magnified, and may make folks more susceptible to depression.
In a perfect world, everyone with low vision would have a vibrant support network and never feel alone. We do not live in a perfect world, but we are committed to changing lives by harnessing the power of technology to connect, inspire and empower one another.
The site was created by a visually impaired designer using a screen reader/magnifier application and accessibility-ready web authoring tools. Frankly, we feel this is what sets apart from the rest and we are proud of our screen-reader and low-vision app friendly community.
